After graduating from Virginia Tech, Tommy was permitted by the Virginia State Bar to forego law school and pursue his legal training by studying under his father, Tom C. Smith. The Virginia Law Reader Program afforded Tommy a rare opportunity to train in the same way as many great attorneys of the past including Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln.
